Wasps & Stinging Insects

Wasp and Stinging Insect Control in Northern & Central Indiana

Wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are a seasonal reality in Indiana, and most of the time they go about their business without causing problems. But when a nest is built near an entry point, under a deck, or in a high-traffic area of your yard, they become a genuine safety concern — especially for children, pets, and anyone with a venom allergy.

Sam's Pest Control removes wasp nests and treats stinging insect activity for homeowners across northern and central Indiana. We offer prompt service for urgent situations, because a wasp problem near your family is not something that should wait.

Common Stinging Insects in Indiana

Not all stinging insects are the same, and identifying what you are dealing with helps determine the right treatment approach.

Paper Wasps

Slender, brownish wasps that build open, umbrella-shaped nests from a papery material. Commonly found under eaves, on porch ceilings, and in sheltered outdoor structures. Less aggressive than yellow jackets but will sting if the nest is disturbed.

Yellow Jackets

Stocky, yellow and black wasps that build enclosed nests in the ground, inside wall voids, or in dense shrubs. Yellow jackets are the most aggressive common stinging insect in Indiana and are responsible for the majority of wasp stings. Ground nests are particularly dangerous because they are easy to stumble upon.

Bald-Faced Hornets

Large, black and white insects that build the distinctive gray, football-shaped aerial nests often seen hanging from tree branches or eaves. Highly defensive of their nests and capable of stinging multiple times.

European Hornets

Larger than yellow jackets, brownish in color, and one of the few stinging insects active at night. They nest in hollow trees, wall voids, and attic spaces.

Why You Should Not Handle a Nest Yourself

Store-bought wasp sprays work at close range on small, exposed nests with limited activity. For anything larger, more established, or in a difficult location, DIY treatment carries real risk.

Wasps release alarm pheromones when threatened, which can trigger a rapid, coordinated defensive response from the entire colony. A nest that seemed manageable at dusk can produce dozens or hundreds of aggressive wasps in seconds if disturbed at the wrong time or in the wrong way.

Ground nests are particularly hazardous because they are not always visible until you are already too close. Wall void nests are difficult to treat completely without knowing the full extent of the colony, and improper treatment can drive wasps further into the structure.

For anyone with a known venom allergy, the risk of DIY wasp removal is not worth taking under any circumstances.

How Sam's Removes Wasp Nests

Our approach to wasp and stinging insect removal is straightforward: identify the nest, treat it safely and completely, and remove it where appropriate.

1

Inspection

We locate all active nests on your property, including any that may not be immediately visible, such as ground nests or nests inside wall voids or soffits.

2

Treatment

We apply targeted treatment directly to the nest and surrounding area to eliminate the colony. Treatment method and timing are chosen based on the species, nest location, and level of activity.

3

Nest Removal

Where safely accessible, we remove the nest following treatment to discourage new colonies from moving into the same location the following season.

4

Prompt Service

We understand that a wasp nest near your family is urgent. When you call early in the day, we do our best to get there promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are wasps most active in Indiana?

Wasp and hornet colonies build through spring and reach peak size in late summer, typically July through September. This is when stinging insects are most numerous and most defensive. Yellow jacket activity often peaks in August and September as colonies grow large and food sources become more competitive.

Is a small nest worth treating?

Yes. A nest that is small in spring will be significantly larger by midsummer. Early treatment is easier, less expensive, and eliminates the risk before the colony reaches peak size and aggression.

What should I do if I find a ground nest?

Mark the area clearly so others avoid it and keep children and pets away. Do not attempt to cover, flood, or spray the nest yourself. Ground nests can contain thousands of yellow jackets and are among the most dangerous stinging insect situations to treat without proper equipment and protective gear. Contact us and we will handle it safely.

Will wasps come back after treatment?

Treatment eliminates the active colony. However, wasps may scout previously used nest locations the following spring. Removing the nest after treatment and sealing any wall voids or structural gaps reduces the likelihood of a new colony establishing in the same spot.

Are your treatments safe for children and pets?

Yes. We use products appropriate for residential use and will let you know how long to keep people and pets clear of the treated area after service.

Do you treat for bees as well?

We treat for wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. Honeybee removal is a different process and is generally handled by beekeepers rather than pest control companies, as honeybees are beneficial and often relocated rather than exterminated. If you are not sure whether you have bees or wasps, contact us and we will help you identify what you are dealing with.
